In this article I would like to talk about how many calories you should eat daily to lose weight.

The #1 thing most people mention when it comes to how you should lose weight is that you should reduce your calorie intake. This is not true.

    Why?

By reducing your calorie intake you are ignoring your bodies daily function based off your weight, your height, and your age. This function is your metabolism. You’ll slow down your metabolic rate by reducing the amount of calories you take in on a daily basis. Your metabolism will begin to store calories…which will then turn to fat. This is obviously not what you want to happen if you are trying to burn fat, lose weight, and gain lean muscle.

So what do I do? Simply put, it is not about how many calories you take in, it is about how many calories you burn off. You should eat the appropriate amount of calories daily that your body needs. Obviously, make sure those calories are coming from healthy foods. These foods would be fiber, complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and foods rich in vitamins and minerals. To burn off calories, you need to do exercise. You must do weight training for optimum results as building muscles burns off calories faster than cardio alone. One of the best cardio exercises I recommend is walking on a treadmill on an incline of 9-12 degrees set at a speed of 2.5-3 for 15-20 minutes. That’s right, with that particular cardio exercise, you only need to do it for 15-20 minutes…it’s that effective!

Here is The Harris-Benedict formula you can use to determine the amount of calories your body needs daily.

    Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 X wt in kg) + (5 X ht in cm) - (6.8 X age in years)

    Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 X wt in kg) + (1.8 X ht in cm) - (4.7 X age in years)

I wish you the best of success in getting yourself in better health! Good Luck!
